SEO in Nepal follows the same rules as anywhere Google is the main search engine, with three local twists: people search in English, Nepali and Romanized Nepali; most searches happen on phones, often on mobile data; and competition for most local terms is thinner than in larger markets. A Nepali business that fixes its site's technical basics, completes its Google Business Profile and publishes specific, useful pages can often see movement within three to six months.
The hard part is not knowing what to do; it is avoiding spending on what does not work, such as bought links and dozens of thin pages. This guide separates the two.
How competitive is SEO in Nepal?
For searches with local intent, such as "dental clinic in Lalitpur" or "school bag price in Nepal", competition is usually modest; results are often a mix of directories, Facebook pages and thin sites. For tourism searches aimed at foreigners, such as "Everest Base Camp trek", you compete with international operators and publishers, and it becomes an international SEO problem.
Decide which game you are in before paying anyone. A furniture shop in Butwal needs local SEO. A Thamel trekking company needs international content and links (see websites for trekking and tour operators in Nepal). An IT exporter needs rankings in the countries where its clients live, not in Nepal at all.
How do people in Nepal search?
They mix languages and scripts. The same person might type "bike price in nepal", "ramro restaurant thamel" and "नेपाली पात्रो" in one day, and use voice search in Nepali. Keyword work in Nepal starts with finding out which forms your customers actually use.
Habits to plan around:
- "Price in Nepal" searches are a very common pattern for products, so a clear, dated price on the page earns clicks.
- Romanized Nepali ("kotha", "sasto", "ghar bahal") appears in real queries and is rarely targeted on purpose.
- Maps and "near me" searches drive visits to restaurants, clinics, salons and shops.
- Keyword tools give coarse numbers for Nepal. Google Search Console's query report, once it has a few weeks of data, is a better guide to what people type.
For Devanagari content to rank at all, it has to be Unicode, not Preeti. Our guide to building a Nepali-English bilingual website covers the details.
What do Nepali websites usually get wrong technically?
Slow mobile pages, content search engines cannot read, and sites never connected to Google Search Console. Fixing these is cheap compared with content or link work, and it comes first.
A short technical checklist:
- Mobile pages within the Core Web Vitals "good" thresholds: LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP within 200 milliseconds, CLS within 0.1. Our Core Web Vitals guide explains each.
- One version of the site: http, https, www and non-www all redirecting to a single https address.
- An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- A unique title and meta description for each page.
- Notices, menus and price lists published as text, not only as JPG images or scanned PDFs, a habit common on school, NGO and restaurant sites.
- All Nepali text in Unicode, with no Preeti.
- 301 redirects from old URLs whenever a site is rebuilt.

How does local SEO work in Nepal?
Local SEO in Nepal centres on your Google Business Profile, which controls how you appear in Google Maps and in the local results at the top of search. Most local businesses have a profile; far fewer have one that is complete, accurate and active.
What makes a difference:
- Pin placement. Addresses in Nepal are informal, so an accurate pin and a landmark in the address ("near the ward office, Maharajgunj") matter more than a street name.
- Primary category. It influences which searches you appear for more than the description does.
- Hours, including Saturday, public holidays and changes for Dashain and Tihar.
- Phone number with the +977 country code, and a website link with UTM tags so visits show up in analytics.
- Photos of the real premises, products and staff, added regularly.
- Reviews. Ask customers and reply to every review. Buying reviews breaks Google's policies and can get a profile suspended.
Keep your name, address and phone number identical on Google, Facebook and any directories. The step-by-step version is in our Google Business Profile optimization guide.
What content ranks for Nepali buyers?
Pages that answer a buying question specifically: what it costs, how it works, how long it takes, what is included and who it suits. Generic pages that could belong to any company rarely rank and rarely convert.
Good examples: a clinic's page listing procedure prices with the date they were updated, a furniture shop's page on delivery outside the Valley, a consultancy's page on the documents needed for a student visa to one country. Avoid publishing 77 near-identical pages, one per district, with only the name swapped. Google treats that pattern as doorway pages.
Choose the language page by page. English often wins for product and service searches; Nepali pages help when your audience searches in Nepali, such as older customers or public-facing services.
Which links help, and which get sites penalised?
Links from real Nepali organisations that know you help: trade associations, chambers of commerce, suppliers, partners and genuine news coverage. Bought links, private blog networks and "1,000 backlinks for NPR 5,000" packages risk manual penalties and waste money.
One trap is especially common here: many online news portals sell sponsored articles. Buying one is legitimate advertising, but Google's spam policies require paid links to carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". A followed link sold as "SEO" is a link scheme. Google's guidance is published on Google Search Central.
How much does SEO cost in Nepal?
These are typical market ranges in Nepal in 2026. They vary with competition, the size of the site and how much content is written for you.
| Service | Typical range (NPR) |
|---|---|
| One-off technical SEO audit | 20,000-1 lakh |
| Google Business Profile and local setup | 15,000-60,000 |
| Monthly retainer, local business | 20,000-80,000 a month |
| Monthly retainer, competitive or international SEO | 80,000-2 lakh+ a month |
Expect early movement on low-competition local terms in three to six months, and six to twelve months or more for competitive and international terms.
How do you choose an SEO company in Nepal?
Pick the one that explains exactly what it will do in the first month, reports leads and revenue next to rankings, and keeps every account in your name. Avoid anyone who promises a specific position by a specific date; nobody controls Google's rankings.
Questions to ask:
- What will you fix or publish in the first 30 days?
- How will you report results, and will I see enquiries, not only rankings?
- Where will links come from? Can I see examples?
- Will Search Console, Analytics and the Business Profile be in my name?
- What happens to the content if we stop working together?

Frequently asked questions
Is SEO worth it for a small business in Nepal?
Usually, if customers search for what you sell. For many local services competition is modest, so a well-built site and a complete Google Business Profile can bring steady enquiries at low ongoing cost. If your customers mainly find you through Facebook or word of mouth and rarely search, spend less on SEO and just keep the basics right.
Does a .com.np domain help SEO in Nepal?
A .com.np domain tells Google the site is aimed at Nepal, which helps a little for local searches and suits businesses serving Nepali customers. It does not make up for a slow site or thin content. If you also sell abroad, a .com is usually the better main domain. Our .com.np registration guide covers the choice.
Should website content be in Nepali or English for SEO?
Match the language your customers search in. For many product and service searches in Nepal, English queries are common; for some audiences and topics, Nepali or Romanized Nepali matters more. Check your Search Console queries, then create separate Nepali pages where there is demand, in Unicode with hreflang tags, rather than mixing both languages on one page.
How long does SEO take to work in Nepal?
For low-competition local terms, expect first movement three to six months after technical fixes and new content. Competitive terms and international tourism keywords take six to twelve months or longer. Google Business Profile improvements can show sooner. Anyone quoting a fixed date for a fixed position is guessing, because rankings depend on competitors and on Google's systems.
