Business website design that makes the next step obvious
Structure, copy and mobile-first layouts for small and mid-size businesses, designed around the questions your customers ask before they call.
A website design company works out what each page says, in what order, and how it looks and behaves on a phone, so that a stranger understands what you do and contacts you. For a small business, good design is less about visual flair than about answering four questions fast: what do you do, where, what does it cost or how do I start, and why should I trust you. Meritbyte Technologies, a Nepal-based web and software development company, designs business websites for companies in Nepal, the USA, Australia, Canada and the UK with those questions as the brief.
Who is website design for, and who can skip it?
It is for businesses whose site is losing them work: it looks dated, it is hard to read on a phone, or visitors leave without calling. It also suits new businesses that need a credible site before their first sales conversation.
If you need one page with a phone number and a map, a Google Business Profile and a simple template will do. Custom web applications with logins and dashboards belong with our web development service, where design is one part of a larger build.
What does a small business get?
You get a designed and built site, not a set of pictures handed to someone else to code.
| You receive | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Page plan | A sitemap and the purpose of each page | Stops the site growing into a maze of "About" sub-pages |
| Wireframes | Grey-box layouts for each page type | You approve structure before anyone argues about colors |
| Copy | Your text edited, or written from an interview | Most sites fail on words, not visuals |
| Designs | Mobile and desktop layouts in your brand | You see what customers will see, at both sizes |
| Built site | WordPress or Next.js, on a staging URL | You can click through it on your own phone |
| Contact paths | Forms, click-to-call, WhatsApp or Viber links | Enquiries arrive where your team already works |
Why structure and copy come before color
Design decisions are easier once the words exist. We start each page from the visitor's question, write a headline that answers it, then add proof: starting prices where you are comfortable sharing them, photos of real work, qualifications, service areas. Then the layout gets designed.
A useful test: cover your logo and read the homepage headline. If it could belong to any competitor ("Quality solutions for your needs"), rewrite it. "Trekking permits and guides for the Annapurna region" tells a visitor they are in the right place.
For landing pages and campaign pages, our landing page conversion checklist lists the specific fixes we apply.
Mobile-first, responsive website design in practice
Responsive website design means one site whose layout adapts to the screen, and we design the phone version first because that is where most small-business visitors arrive. Concretely:
- Layouts start at 360 pixels wide, then expand to tablet and desktop.
- Body text is at least 16 px, with line lengths that do not force sideways reading on a laptop.
- Text contrast meets WCAG 2.2 AA: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text.
- Buttons and links are comfortably larger than the WCAG 2.2 AA minimum target of 24 by 24 CSS pixels.
- Phone numbers are tap-to-call links, and a call or WhatsApp button stays within reach.
- Forms ask only what you will use; every extra field costs enquiries.
- Images are resized per screen size so pages stay usable on slow mobile connections.
Designing for your market
Brand and layout travel well; details do not:
- Nepal: Nepali-English sites need Unicode fonts that render conjuncts correctly, prices in NPR, and Viber or WhatsApp buttons next to the phone number. See our page for businesses in Nepal.
- USA: accessibility is a legal exposure under the ADA, so AA contrast and keyboard access are designed in, not patched later.
- Australia: consumer prices are shown including GST, and an ABN in the footer is a common trust signal. More on our Australia page.
- Canada: Quebec audiences expect French, and a bilingual site needs layouts that allow for longer French strings. See our Canada page.
- UK: consumer prices include VAT, and the cookie consent banner has to meet PECR without covering the call to action on a phone.
From first call to live site
It starts with a free scoping conversation, and the website project brief template helps you arrive with answers ready. You get back a scope, a timeline and a number.
The first milestone has a fixed price: page plan, wireframes and the homepage design in your brand, so you see the direction before committing further. The remaining pages are designed and built in two-week blocks on a staging URL, with a demo at the end of each block and a written update every week. At launch we set up redirects from the old site, analytics and Search Console; afterwards you can edit the site yourself or keep us on a small monthly retainer.
Not sure yet? Small businesses can request a free website design idea to see a direction before any commitment.
Tools and platforms
We design in Figma, so you can comment on layouts in a browser. Most business sites are built on WordPress with a custom block theme, so your team can edit text and add pages without a developer. Where speed or custom features matter more, we build in Next.js with React. Stores go on Shopify or WooCommerce through our e-commerce service.
What drives the cost of business website design
The main cost drivers:
- Number of distinct page types. Ten service pages sharing one template cost far less than ten unique layouts.
- Copywriting. Writing from scratch takes longer than editing your drafts.
- Brand work. Designing with an existing logo and colors is quicker than creating them.
- Photography. Real photos outperform stock but need a shoot or a library.
- Languages. Each language adds translation, layout checks and SEO setup.
- Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs and payment gateways add build and testing time.
Market prices vary a lot between countries and between freelancers and agencies; our guides to website cost in the UK and website design cost in Canada give typical ranges and explain the spread.
Red flags when choosing a website design company
- The proposal shows desktop mockups only, with no mobile version.
- Nobody asks who your customers are or what they ask before buying.
- The design fee excludes building it, or the build is on a proprietary builder you cannot leave.
- The domain will be registered in the designer's name "for convenience".
- The homepage relies on an auto-rotating slider and stock photos of handshakes.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages does a small business website need?
Usually five to fifteen: a homepage, one page per main service, about, contact, and a page for each area you serve if location matters. Separate service pages beat one long "Services" page, because each can answer one specific search. Start lean and add pages when you have something specific to say.
Do you write the website copy?
Yes, if you want us to. We interview you and your team, then draft each page around the questions customers ask before buying. You review and correct facts on staging. If you prefer to write it yourself, we edit for length, headings and clarity so it fits the layout and reads well on a phone.
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?
It can, if URLs change without redirects or pages with traffic are dropped. We crawl the old site, 301-redirect every URL with traffic or links to its new address, and check Search Console after launch. Our website redesign checklist covers the full process.
What is responsive website design?
Responsive website design is a single website whose layout adjusts to the screen it is viewed on, from a small phone to a wide desktop monitor, using the same content and URL. It replaced separate mobile sites years ago. Google indexes the mobile version of pages, so a poor phone layout affects search visibility as well as enquiries.
Do I need a logo before starting?
No. If you have a logo, we build the palette and type around it. If not, we can create a simple wordmark and color set in the first milestone. A full brand identity with guidelines is a separate, larger piece of work and rarely needed before a first website.
