Hotel and restaurant websites that take bookings directly

A hotel or restaurant site has one job most owners underrate: turning a guest who already found you on Google or an OTA into a booking you do not pay commission on.

Hotel website design in 2026 is judged by one number: how many bookings arrive direct instead of through Booking.com, Expedia or Agoda. The winning site is fast on a phone, shows live rates from a proper booking engine, and makes booking direct as easy as the OTA app. For restaurants, the equivalent is a readable menu, a reservation button and correct opening hours.

Why do hotels lose direct bookings they should have won?

Because the direct path is usually worse than the OTA path. Many guests find a property on an OTA, then search its name on Google to compare. If your site is slow, offers an enquiry form instead of live availability, or quotes a higher rate, they go back and book there.

That detour is expensive. OTA commission is commonly somewhere between 15 and 25 percent of the booking value; it is a typical range that varies with your contract, market and any visibility programs you join. A booking engine usually costs a monthly subscription or a small per-booking fee instead.

The usual culprits on hotel sites:

  • An email address or enquiry form where a booking engine should be.
  • Room pages with three photos and no bed size, view or floor area.
  • Hero images of several megabytes that push loading past 2.5 seconds on mobile data.

What does a hotel booking engine do, and do you also need a channel manager?

A booking engine is the checkout on your own website; a channel manager keeps rates and inventory in sync across every OTA and that checkout. A property on more than one OTA needs both, and many vendors bundle them with a property management system (PMS).

For the website, what matters is how the engine is embedded: on your domain or a subdomain, in your branding, with the currencies and gateways your guests use, and passing booking revenue to Google Analytics 4. A resort website selling villas, packages, spa treatments and transfers needs an engine that sells extras, not just rooms.

Restaurant website development: menus, tables and orders

Restaurant website development is a smaller build where details decide everything. The menu should be HTML text, not a PDF or a photo of the printed card, so it reads on a phone and updates in a minute.

Three integrations do most of the work:

  • Table reservations through a system such as OpenTable, SevenRooms or ResDiary, ideally one that also powers the reserve button on your Google Business Profile.
  • Online ordering you own, so regulars ordering takeaway are not routed through a delivery app's commission.
  • Allergen and dietary labels stored with each dish. In the UK, for example, food businesses must be able to tell customers which of the 14 regulated allergens a dish contains.

Photos, speed and Google's hotel results

Photos sell rooms and also make most hotel sites slow. Serve them as AVIF or WebP at the size each screen needs, lazy-load everything below the first view, and keep Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds on a mid-range phone. Our explainer on Core Web Vitals covers the thresholds.

Google shows hotel prices in Search and Maps, including free booking links, for properties whose booking engine or channel manager is a Google integration partner. Ask your vendor, then make sure your Google Business Profile, Hotel or Restaurant schema, address and phone number agree. The Google Business Profile optimization guide covers the rest of local search.

Prices, fees and card data

In the US, the FTC's rule on unfair or deceptive fees, in force since May 2025, requires lodging businesses to show the total price including mandatory charges such as resort fees. The UK banned drip pricing under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, and Australian consumer law expects consumer prices to include GST. In Nepal, state plainly whether a rate includes 13% VAT and service charge.

Card numbers belong on the booking engine's or gateway's PCI DSS-compliant pages, never in your own database. Marketing to UK or EU guests can bring their data protection rules to you even from Nepal; at home, the Individual Privacy Act 2075 applies.

What should hotel website design put first?

  1. A booking engine on your domain, connected to your channel manager, with rates that match the OTAs.
  2. Room pages listing bed configuration, size, view, occupancy, accessibility features and ten or more well-compressed photos.
  3. A reason to book direct, such as breakfast, late checkout or an airport pickup, shown beside the price on every room page.
  4. Google Business Profile, hotel schema and the free booking link through your vendor.
  5. Booking revenue tracked in GA4, so you can see what the site earns.

How Meritbyte Technologies builds hospitality sites

Meritbyte Technologies, a Nepal-based web and software development company, builds hotel and restaurant sites around a booking engine you already use or choose, because for a single property a bespoke reservation system rarely beats the subscription tools on cost or reliability.

The first milestone has a fixed price, you test the site on a staging URL from your own phone, and the domain, hosting and Google accounts are registered in your name. We work with properties across Nepal, including hotels and guesthouses in Pokhara, and remotely with hospitality businesses in places such as Melbourne. Frequently asked questions

How much does a hotel website cost?

It depends on integrations and languages more than design. A guesthouse site using a vendor's booking engine is a modest project; a resort with packages, several outlets and multiple languages is a much larger one. Booking engine and channel manager subscriptions are separate monthly costs, so compare quotes that list every integration line by line.

Can a hotel website beat OTA prices?

Often not on the headline rate, because OTA contracts may include rate parity terms, although some markets have restricted them. It can beat the OTA on value: breakfast, an upgrade, a transfer or better cancellation terms for booking direct. Show that benefit next to the price on every room page, not only on the homepage.

Should a restaurant use a PDF menu?

Not as the only version. PDFs are awkward to read on phones, slow to update and harder for Google and AI assistants to read than normal text. Put the menu on a web page with dish names, short descriptions, prices and dietary labels, and keep a PDF only as a printable extra for groups and events.

Does a hotel or restaurant need its own app?

Rarely. Few guests install an app for a two-night stay or a single dinner, and a fast mobile website with booking, ordering and a digital guest guide covers nearly everything. An app makes sense for groups running several properties with a loyalty program that brings guests back often enough to keep it installed.
