Digital marketing in Nepal, for most small businesses, means Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Google, paid for in modest amounts and judged by the messages and orders they produce. A plan that works spends the first month on foundations, the next two testing a few ad sets, and only then puts more money behind whatever brought in paying customers. Here is that plan, with budget splits you can adapt to whatever you have.
What does digital marketing in Nepal involve for a small business?
Four channel groups do nearly all the work: Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger), Google (Search, Maps, YouTube), TikTok, and direct messaging through Viber, WhatsApp and SMS. Nepali customers usually message before they buy, so the sale tends to happen in a chat window rather than a checkout.
| Channel | Works well for | Where money leaks |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook and Instagram ads | Restaurants, clothing, electronics, courses, events | Boosted posts that optimise for likes instead of messages |
| Google Search ads | Repairs, clinics, rentals, B2B services, tourists searching in English | Broad keywords matching searches you cannot serve |
| Google Business Profile | Any business customers visit or call | Wrong hours, no photos, unanswered reviews |
| TikTok | Food, fashion, beauty, anything visual for younger buyers | Entertaining clips that never say where to buy |
| YouTube | Course explainers, property walkthroughs, product demos | Expensive production before anyone is watching |
| Viber, WhatsApp, SMS | Repeat customers, restock alerts, festival offers | Messaging people who never agreed to hear from you |
You do not need all six. A café in Jhamsikhel needs a strong Business Profile and Instagram; a B2B supplier in Birgunj may need only Google Search and a good quote form.
How much should a small business in Nepal spend on digital marketing?
Spend an amount you can keep up for three months without judging it every week, because the first month mostly buys information. Meta lets you test an ad set from a few hundred rupees a day, so the minimum is low; what matters is how the budget is split as you learn.
| Stage | Ads | Creative | Setup, tools, testing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1: foundations | about 20% | about 40% | about 40% |
| Months 2-3: testing | about 60% | about 30% | about 10% |
| Month 4 onwards: scaling | 70-80% | 15-25% | about 5% |
These are starting splits, not rules. Ad costs rise when competition does, especially in the weeks before Dashain, Tihar and the Nepali New Year in Baisakh, so book creative earlier and expect each message to cost more in those weeks.
Meta and Google bill in foreign currency. You will need a card enabled for international payments, such as a dual-currency or dollar card from a Nepali bank used within the limits Nepal Rastra Bank sets (these change, so ask your bank), or a partner who pays and bills you in rupees. Either way, the ad account should sit in your own Meta business portfolio.
A 90-day plan for social media marketing in Nepal
The order matters more than the amounts. Ads sent to a broken page or a slow inbox waste money however well they are targeted.
- Weeks 1-2: fix Google Business Profile. Correct name, category, hours, phone and map pin, plus 15-20 real photos. Reply to every existing review. Our step-by-step Google Business Profile guide covers the settings that matter.
- Weeks 1-2: make one page fast. A product page, menu or landing page that loads quickly on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, with WhatsApp, Viber and call buttons near the top.
- Weeks 2-3: set up tracking. Meta Pixel with the Conversions API if you have a website, GA4 events for calls, form submissions and WhatsApp clicks, UTM tags on every link you post, and a "how did you hear about us?" question in chat or at checkout.
- Weeks 3-4: shoot a batch of creative. Ten to fifteen short vertical videos and a set of product photos on a good phone, with captions in Nepali, English or both depending on the audience.
- Weeks 5-8: test two or three Meta ad sets. Choose messages or purchases as the objective. Target the districts or radius you can actually deliver to, and vary one thing per ad set: the offer, the audience or the video.
- Weeks 5-8: add Google Search if people search for what you sell. Phrase and exact match keywords, location targeting, and a weekly check of the search terms report to add negative keywords.
- Weeks 9-12: cut and move. Switch off the bottom half, move budget to what produced orders, refresh creative every few weeks, and start collecting opted-in contacts for offers.
- Week 12: review by cost per paying customer. Compare channels on that number alone.
Facebook ads in Nepal: what works and what wastes money
Click-to-message ads suit the Nepali market, because buyers want to ask about price, size, colour and delivery before committing. They only work if someone replies within minutes; a message answered the next morning is usually a lost sale, so set up instant replies and saved answers in Meta Business Suite.
A few habits separate profitable Facebook ads in Nepal from expensive ones:
- Put the price in the ad. If the comment section fills with "pp" and "price?", the ad is doing the sales team's job badly.
- Use Ads Manager for anything ongoing. The Boost button is fine for a quick test if you pick "more messages" as the goal, but Ads Manager gives you placements, exclusions and reporting you can trust.
- Exclude what you cannot serve. If you only deliver inside Kathmandu Valley, do not pay to reach Pokhara.
- Match language to audience. Nepali copy for local buyers, English for tourists and the diaspora, and test both where you are unsure.
- Optimise for purchases only when tracking sees them. Most cash-on-delivery sellers are better off optimising for messages and recording the sale by hand.
Why should you not rely only on Facebook and TikTok?
Because access can disappear overnight. TikTok was blocked in Nepal from November 2023 until August 2024, and in September 2025 a government order against unregistered platforms briefly blocked several major ones, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Hacked pages and disabled ad accounts do similar damage on a smaller scale.
Keep at least three channels you control:
- A website or single fast page, even a simple one, that ranks for your name and main product. Our guide to SEO in Nepal explains how Nepali businesses earn organic traffic.
- Google Business Profile, which keeps working when social platforms do not.
- An opted-in customer list of phone numbers and emails, stored somewhere you own, so a festival offer can still reach last year's buyers.
Protect the social accounts too: two admins on every page, two-factor authentication on each admin's personal account, and nobody logging in from a shared agency password.
How do you measure whether digital marketing is working?
Measure cost per paying customer by channel, and ignore follower counts until that number is under control. Everything else is a step towards it.
Track four numbers each week in a simple sheet or CRM: conversations started, conversations that became orders or bookings, orders actually delivered and paid, and repeat purchases. For cash-on-delivery sellers the gap between placed and delivered orders is often the most important number in the business, because a campaign bringing in customers who refuse delivery can look like a success in Ads Manager. Use your delivery partner's reports to close that loop.
Whether to put the next rupee into ads or into search depends on how customers find you; our comparison of Google Ads vs SEO works through that choice.
Should you hire a digital marketing agency in Nepal?
Hire one when you have a budget for ads plus a fee, and no one on the team with time to produce content every week. If your monthly ad spend is smaller than the fee an agency would charge, do it yourself for three months first.
Ask these before signing:
- Will the Facebook page, ad account, pixel and Google Ads account sit in my business portfolio, with you added as a partner?
- Is ad spend invoiced separately from your fee, so I can see exactly what went to Meta and Google?
- What will you report every month: reach and likes, or messages, orders and cost per customer?
- How many pieces of content per month, and who shoots them?
- Do you ever buy followers, likes or reviews? (Any answer other than no ends the conversation.)
- If we stop working together, what do I keep?
How Meritbyte Technologies runs digital marketing
Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based web and software development company that also runs digital marketing and SEO. We set up tracking before spending on ads, keep every ad account, pixel and page in the client's name, and report results next to leads and revenue rather than likes. We do not buy links or followers.
Campaigns run in two-week blocks with a weekly written report, and there is no lock-in beyond the current block. If you do not yet have a website to send ads to, our free website design idea for small businesses is a sensible first step, and our page on website development in Nepal explains what we build for local businesses.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend on Facebook ads in Nepal each month?
Enough to run two or three ad sets for at least four weeks without stopping them early. Meta accepts small daily budgets, so a test can start at a few hundred rupees a day per ad set. Judge the result by cost per paying customer, not by reach, and increase spend only on ad sets that produced orders. Expect costs to rise before Dashain and Tihar.
Is boosting a post the same as running a Facebook ad?
A boost is a simplified ad. It can work for a quick test if you choose "more messages" or "more website visitors" as the goal. Ads Manager gives far more control: choice of objective, placements, audience exclusions, several creatives per ad set and proper reporting. For any campaign you plan to run for more than a week, use Ads Manager.
Do I need a website if I already sell on Facebook?
You can sell without one, but you are exposed if the page is hacked, restricted or blocked, and you cannot run proper Google Search ads or track sales well. A simple, fast website with your products, prices, delivery areas and contact buttons gives you a channel you own and a place to send ad traffic.
How long does digital marketing take to show results in Nepal?
Paid ads show signals within days, but allow four to eight weeks of testing before judging a channel, because early results swing widely. Google Business Profile improvements often show in calls and direction requests within a few weeks. SEO and content usually take several months. Plan and budget for three months before deciding what to keep.
